LOBBYING TIPS
Lobbying is the art of influencing others. When it comes to State legislation,
the persons you want to influence are members of the Maryland General Assembly.
- Make sure you are a registered voter.
- Familiarize yourself with key legislators, and the legislative and
budget process.
- Know the issue inside and out, including the opponent's side and MCEA's
position.
- Set your priorities and develop a strategy.
- Identify key elected officials to inform about your issue. Make your
point in a brief but convincing manner.
- You may communicate with a legislator by letter, phone, e-mail, or
personal visit.
- State the effect the proposed bill will have, if passed.
- Be firm and persistent, but courteous and never threatening or demanding.
- Copy the Association's government relations staff on your correspondence.
- Follow up any meetings or communications with a thank-you note.
As soon as the session ends, prepare for the next session. Build political
action. Network with other organizations and individuals that have similar
interests. Stay in contact with the legislators. Good luck!
